What Flower is This?

When the flowers started coming up again, I was wondering if one particular type was a weed or a perennial. This is our third summer in this house, but the first one I was pregnant and too tired to pay attention, the second summer I was breastfeeding and my Mother-in-law had just died. So, I feel like this is truly the first summer. I am noticing flowers I didn't in the past. Like the one pictured. I finally figured out that it is a columbine. It's beautiful, but I'm guessing it's a self-seeder because there's a lot more than before.

The girls and I have been taking lots of walks. A few weeks ago we noticed large white birds with a very long beak. I asked around and found out that pelicans were visiting, as they've often done, but staying longer this year. From what I understand, the birds are the American White Pelican. We watched them "fish." It does not dive for fish as the Brown Pelican does. Instead, it dips its head underwater to scoop up fish. The girls laughed while watching.

It's great to have a lake close by and it would be fun when the girls are older to live on a lake or have a lake home. But, for now, it's wonderful to be able to enjoy it, smell the breeze, and watch the windsurfers. Living on the prairie gives one a sense of connectedness with the earth. The wind blows without distraction. Even though there are days that I could live without it, we are becoming more energy dependent on it. This weekend we are hosting a national windsurfing competition. It's growth in popularity is due mostly to the incredible wind conditions, but also the great hospitality and music festival. Go wind!
